I took these pictures in really low light conditions.

Amazon Kindle

I have read more books, more often, and more faster. Ok, “more faster” doesn’t make sense but it sounded like it fit better.  But I also have been traveling a lot more meaning I have more free time to read.

The Amazon Kindle uses electronic ink technology so that you can read off of it with ease and without having to strain your eyes from backlight screens. You can read it in any light you can a book, and you can even read it on a plane next to a fat guy in overalls hogging all of the armrest on your way to Hawaii. It’s even easy to read in direct sunlight. Although I didn’t do much reading on the sandy shores when vacationing in Oahu.

Likes:

  • Expandable memory. You can hold hella books on here.
  • Able to download books wirelessly using WhisperNet (EVDO) or directly through Amazon.com
  • Look up words you don’t know. It’s fast to scroll up to the line with the word you don’t know and look it up using Kindle’s built-in dictionary.
  • Very compact, light, and easy to hold with one hand. When reading regular books, my hand would cramp up from holding the book open with one hand using my pinky finger. Now I can lie down and read without Nintendo fingers. Thanks Amazon Kindle!
  • Easy to read, easy to breeze through a book. Make highlights and notes in specific paragraphs and go to your clippings later. Search words in the book using the aptly named “Search” feature.
  • Battery life lasts really long. I keep the wireless turned off when not in use so that it doesn’t have to search for an EVDO network and lasts uber long. I’ve gone through a couple books without having to charge it.
  • Haven’t tried this yet, but you can email yourself documents to be sent wirelessly to your Kindle (for a small pay-per-use fee). Or you can upload it via the mini-USB cable. You can also upload images and view porn on electronic paper. There are also volume buttons on the bottom so I assume there is a way to put music or ebooks on it too.

Dislikes:

  • I have read complaints that the side buttons are easy to accidently press. This is true. Fumbling around while grabbing my adult beverages from the stewartress on the plane confirmed this. I skipped a bunch of pages on accident and had to figure out where I left off. But on a good note, I love that international flights give you free booze. Boozing it up, baby!
  • I don’t have very many complaints except for the one above. Prior to purchasing, I’ve also read complaints about the page flash and delay when you turn the page. The page flash is part of the ink placement process. For me though, I don’t have and gripes with it. It’s cool in my book.

The Kindle is dope if you read a lot and don’t want to carry around a stack of books. A new version is supposed to come out sometime in 2009, so you can wait for the updated version or just get this one. I’m sure the price will drop with the first generation when the new one comes out.

That is all.

P.S.: Reading is sexy.
