You can do it yourself for less than $200 and even less if you have the materials at home. Some of the materials you can get for cheap, for instance, broken solar cells can be bought online. Broken cells work just as good as regular ones, although they may not look at neat or professional. At least it gets the job done and is one step closer to be self-sufficient.

The outbreak of hepatitis in the Czech Republic looks like is not over. Last week, there were 50 cases where patients were diagnosed with hepatitis A.

Since the beginning of this year, there have been 1,383 cases of hepatitis A that has been reported with Prague being the most affected area. This is a tenfold increase compared to previous year of 2007.

As reported by the Health Ministry this Monday, November 24: the most infected include young children of primary school and kindergarten age.

The Chief Public Health Officer, Michael Vít, predicts that the outbreak will not be over before January 2009. But there is a sign of hope as the number of registered cases is slightly decreasing at the moment.

It is reported that the outbreak of hepatitis first started among the intravenous drug-users and homeless people in Prague during the summertime of 2008. But soon it spread to the general public as it is unknown how this spread so quickly.

Massive demand for vaccination
In September, the Prague Municipality launched a massive ad campaign targeting those at highest risk. As a result, hundreds of the homeless and drug-addicts were vaccinated to prevent the disease from spreading within their social group even more so.

The hepatitis epidemic stirred a massive increase in demand for vaccination among the Czech population. Vit reported that “We have never needed so many vaccines as this year.”

The needs for vaccination unfortunately allowed the public to be scammed. It was exploited by con artists who offered vaccinations online, under a name of an existing private company in Prague. The fraudulent page antizloutenka.info offered overpriced vaccines that had to be paid in advance.

Weeks in hospital

Some early symptoms of a person infected with hepatitis A are flu-like symptoms: fever, fatigue, nausea, and abdominal pain. But some sufferers, particularly children, often show no symptoms at all.

In some cases, the infected may also experience jaundice, a yellowing of the skin. The Czech name of the disease is žloutenka which is translated as the yellow disease.

Those who are infected with hepatitis A have to be hospitalized for several weeks or even months for treatment. Every year about 10 million people worldwide are infected with the Hepatitis A virus.

History
The Prague Castle (or in Czech: Pražský hrad) was founded around 880 AD by prince Bořivoj of the Premyslid dynasty. The first stone building to be built on the Prague Castle region was the Church of the Virgin Mary of which only remnants can be seen today. The St. George’s Convent was established in the 10th century which now houses a gallery. There is also the St. Vitus Cathedral which was built in the 11th century in honr of St. Vitus Rotunda. The Prague Castle served as the seat of Czech princes kings and also as the seat of the Prague bishop.

During the reign of Charles IV (1346-1378) when it became the seat of the Holy Roman Emperor, the Prague Castle experienced one of its greatest periods in history. Because of this, the Royal Palace was rebuilt, fortifications were strengthened, and the construction of St. Vitus Cathedral started.

This expansion of the castle continued well into the reign of Charles’ son: Wenceslas IV. But because of the the Hussite wars (1419 - 1437) and the subsequent decades afterwards, the castle was abandoned and thus lead to its deterioration.

But there was still hope. King Wladislaw Jagellon moved into the Castle after 1483 and the castle was renovated once again. New fortifications and guard towers were built: the Powder Tower, New White Tower, and Daliborka. The Royal Palace expanded even more by the creation of the grandiose Wladislaw Hall, one of the first demonstrations of the Renaissance style in the Czech lands.

The Renaissance style in buildings soon caught on, especially after the Habsburg dynasty took over the Czech throne in 1526. After the seat of power moved to Vienna, the Prague Castle served mainly for recreational purposes: the Royal Garden was built and other entertainment sites such as the Belvedere and Ballgame Hall were added in the 16th century. New residential buildings were built to the west of the Old Royal Palace along with Cathedral and Royal Palace being modified.

The reconstruction of the Prague castle continued even further during the reign of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. He became the Czech king in 1575 and moved his court back to Prague. Rudolf II wanted to turn the castle into an elegant center of power to attract foreign artists, scientists and diplomats. He added the north wing of the Palace and the Spanish Hall to house the emperor’s vast collections of art and science.

Things started to spiral downwards when the Prague Defenestration of 1618 caused a long period of wars. During this time, the Prague Castle was damaged and looted and rarely served as the seat of power.

The last major reconstruction of the Prague Castle took place in the second half of the 18th century. During this time it took on a style of a chateau. But unfortunately, the castle still continued to deteriorate because the seat of power was in Vienna again.

There were a few minor reconstructions later in more recent years. In 1848, emperor Ferdinand V moved to the Prague Castle and the Chapel of the Holy Cross on the Second Courtyard was rebuilt. The Spanish Hall and Rudolf’s Gallery was also remodeled during that time.

After the fall of the Austro-Hungarian empire in 1918, the Prague Castle welcomed the first president of independent Czechoslovakia, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. Parts of the castle still needed remodeling and this was commissioned to the Slovenian architect Josip Plečnik. With the help of Plečnik, the construction of St. Vitus Cathedral was finished in 1929.

After the Revolutions of 1989, many areas of the castle were soon made accessible to the public for the first time in history. First being the Royal Garden, then the Ballgame Hall, the south gardens, and the Imperial Stables.

In the present day, the Prague Castle is the seat of the Czech president and also the most important National Cultural Monument of the Czech Republic. There are a number of priceless art relics, historical documents, as well as the Czech Crown Jewels stored in the castle.

Getting There

Getting There on Foot

Nerudova street - walk up the picturesque but quite steep Nerudova street from Malostranské náměstí. At the top take a sharp right onto Ke Hradu. You will end up in front of the main entrance to the Castle.

Castle Stairs (Zámecké schody) - start up Nerudova from Malostranské náměstí and take a quick right onto Zámecká street. Turn left to climb the romantic Castle Stairs, which will take you to the Garden on the Ramparts (Zahrada na Valech).

Old Castle Stairs (Staré zámecké schody) - the stairs start near the Malostranská metro station and will put you at the beginning of Jiřská street. You will be rewarded with one of the most beautiful views of Prague.

Getting There by Tram

Taking the tram will save you a walk uphill or up the stairs, and the ride is quite scenic. Take tram 22 or 23 (e.g. from Národní třída or the Malostranská metro station) and get off at one of these stops:

Královský letohrádek - if you get off here, you can start with the Royal Garden, Belveder and Ballgame Hall, then cross the Deer Moat bridge to get to the Second Courtyard
Note: The Royal Garden and Deer Moat are closed from November through March

Pražský hrad - as its name suggests, this is considered the main Prague Castle stop. Get off here if you would like to start at the Second Courtyard.

Pohořelec - getting off here will enable you to walk to the Castle through Hradčany and arrive at the main entrance. Probably the nicest route (and our favorite).

Tip: Take the tram up to the Castle and then walk back down when you’re done so that you’re not super tired by the end of the day.

History
Charles Bridge is a stone Gothic bridge connecting the Old Town and Malá Strana. Originally it was called the Stone Bridge (Kamenný most) during the first several centuries after it was built. Its construction began in 1357 and was commissioned by Czech king and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. A man named Petr Parléř was charge of the construction and he was architect whose other works included the St. Vitus Cathedral at the Prague Castle. It is rumored that egg yolks were mixed into the mortar to strengthen the construction of the bridge.

The Charles Bridge is one of the many monuments that was built during Charles IV’s reign, but it is not the first bridge to ever connected the Prague banks of the Vltava. The Judith Bridge, which was the first stone bridge over the Vltava river, was built in 1172 but unfortunately collapsed in a flood in 1342. Perhaps egg yolks weren’t mixed in that bridge’s mortar?

Unlike the Judith Bridge, the Charles Bridge has survived many floods. The most recent flood being in August 2002 when the country experienced the worst flood in the past 500 years.

Charles Bridge
At the end of each bridge there is a tower standing where you can pay a fee to climb up and look at the breath-taking view. Both the Staroměstská věž on the Old Town end of the bridge and the Malostranská věž on the Malá Strana end can be climbed for a view of Prague and the bridge from above.

Walk along the bridge and you’ll notice a total of 30 Baroque statues on both sides of the bridge. The construction of these statues began to be placed on either side of Charles Bridge in the 17th century. In the present day, many of the statues are just replicas, but the originals can be seen in the Lapidarium museum. The most popular statue is on the bridge the one of St. John of Nepomuk. St. John was Czech martyr to the cause of defending the Seal of the Confessional. He was executed during the reign of Wenceslas IV by being thrown into the Vltava river from the bridge. Because the nature of his death, he is considered a protector from floods. Many people believe that touching the statue of St. John is supposed to bring good luck and ensure your return to Prague. Because of this, the plaque on the statue has to be re-polished from the wear of people touching it over the centuries.

The Charles Bridge is a definite must-see list. It is one of the main tourist attractions and here you will also see Czech artists, musicians and souvenir vendors on both sides of the bridge. Come during the sunset and you won’t be disappointed from the breathtaking view — the rays of the sun peaking over the horizon to light the nearby Prague Castle against the evening sky.

You won’t see any cars or trams on this bridge as it is now a pedestrian only zone. In the past both tram and car traffic were allowed. See the bridge at anytime during the day, and it is almost constantly filled with people. To enjoy the bridge all to yourself, go there at night or very early in the morning.

A: Green line - Dejvická to Skalka
B: Yellow line - Zličín to Černý Most
Unlike other cities there are no turn styles or other obstacles you must pass to enter metro station. Prague enforces purchased tickets by placing ticket inspectors at random locations. You can find these inspectors on all forms of transportation. These men, and occasionally women, will show you a badge and ask to see your ticket or pass. They are accompanied by the Police as the inspectors are not legally allowed to ask to see your ID and only the Police are able to. If you do not have a ticket or pass they will ask you to pay a penalty of 500 crowns to them directly (23 USD). Make sure to get a receipt to ensure they are not scam artists.

Taxi drivers in Prague have a had reputation of taking advantage of tourists and foreigners by overcharging them. Fortunately, there is a very minimal need to use a taxi to get around town especially with the convenience and ease of Prague’s public transportation. Taking a taxi is helpful when you are going to and from the airport with a lot of luggage, if the weather is unfavorable being extremely cold or wet, if you need to get to a very distant part of Prague, or if you are traveling past the normal operating hours of the metro at night when trams and buses run less frequently.

If you do use a taxi, keep in mind some of these tips to save you from troubles or getting taken advantage of:
• Avoid taxis that are parked in front of the train station or near a tourist site. These taxi drivers are waiting for unsuspecting or drunk tourists and are known to charge rates several times higher than they should be.

• If you absolutely need to catch a taxi on the street, make sure it is a legitimate registered taxi. The yellow lamp on the roof must be permanently installed and say TAXI in black letters on both sides. The company name, license number, and rates should be printed on both front doors. I would suggest ONLY taking AAA Taxi.

Tip: Bring a GSM phone with you and/or buy a Vodafone SIM card on eBay to be used in Prague before you arrive. Save the phone number to AAA Taxi (shown below) before you leave so that you can call them if you need a taxi. There are English-speaking operators available at all times and you can even ask for a price estimate from the dispatcher.

• Ask beforehand how much your ride should cost. Ask the driver before getting in and even pay in advance if the amount sounds reasonable.

• Once in the car, keep an eye on the rate on the taximeter so that it corresponds to the price list posted in the window of the car. If it doesn’t, bring it to the driver’s attention or have him stop the car and get out.

• You have the right to request a printed receipt from the driver when you pay. If he refuses to give you a printed receipt, you can refuse to pay the fare.

Great hotels, lower prices with Hotelopia

• Use my tip above and order a taxi by phone from a reliable and safe taxi company:

AAA Radiotaxi - tel. 140 14 or 222 333 222, www.aaa-taxi.cz

You’ve just landed in Prague after a 10+ hour flight plus a stop over. Tired? Yes. Want to get to your hotel, hostel, friend’s place, lodge, without any trouble? If so, then follow this guide.

To get to the city center of Prague takes about less than 30 minutes depending which mode of transportation. The Prague Ruzyně airport is located about 9 miles from the city center.

travel accessories, luggage tags, tsa locks, security belts, converters

Taxi or Car (easiest)
If you take a taxi or a friend picks you up in a car, it will take 25 - 30 minutes (40 minutes in heavy traffic) to get to the city center. I would not recommend trying to rent a car and drive in a foreign country especially if you’re unsure of the routes.

Taxi drivers are notorious for ripping you off in Prague especially if you are a foreigner or tourist. Stick to AAA Taxi as they are regulated and strongly recommended because they will give you fair prices. A typical trip from the Prague Ruzyně Airport to the city center of Prague will cost you 500 - 600 crowns (korunas), abbreviated as Kč.

AAA Radiotaxi - tel. 140 14 or 222 333 222, www.aaa-taxi.cz

All - Inclusive Vacations! Flight + 4 Nights Hotel From $718

After you get your luggage from the carousel and come out past the customs, you will see a AAA Taxi booth where you can ask them to hail a taxi for you. AAA Taxi does take credit cards, but it is good to have some Czech crowns on you. To the very right after walking past the customs there are 4-5 ATM Cash machines at the very end of the corridor. Remember that since your US Bank will probably charge you a fee for taking out currency in another country, take out a larger amount instead of going back to ATMs to take out smaller amounts with more transactions resulting in more fees. Be sure to call your bank before leaving the States to unlock your card for use in another country so that your card is not blocked.

Tip: If you open up a Charles Schwab Checking account prior to leaving, you can have an ATM card which doesn’t charge you for fees! No ATM fees at all! Schwab Bank will reimburse you for any fees charged by other banks. www.schwab.com

10% off coupon for luggage, travel accessories, briefcases,

Shuttle companies (easy)
Shuttles are a great deal when traveling with a group of 2-5 people for you to get the best deal. If you are by yourself or, a taxi would be a better option. The costs below are for a 2-person ride:
ČEDAZ (shared ride): 480 Kč
Prague Transfers: 550 Kč
Prague Airport Shuttle: 600 Kč

Hotel pickup (easy)
Hotel pickups are generally pretty easy, but it usually means you are staying at a fancy hotel that offers pick ups for their guests. Check with your hotel before arriving at Prague Ruzyně Airport.
Varies by hotel but usually from 600 Kč up

“Dinghy sailing with Neilson””

Public transportation (medium, but cheapest)
It takes about 30 minutes on public transport (bus + subway/metro) to get to the city center, but if you are uncomfortable taking public transportation in a foreign country, it’s probably best to take a taxi until you are used to it. Keep in mind that you will also have your luggage with you and it can be a pain to drag that around while figuring out how to take the metro.
Prices will run you about 40 Kč
